Hello patriots, and welcome to the Sterling times' newletter for May 2000. My shopping I have been shopping again. First of all, I must mention the excellent book, "Remember When - A nostalgic trip though the consumer era". It's written by Robert Opie, the son of Iona and Peter Opie who dedicated themselves to the preservation of nursery rhymes. The illustration below is typical of those in the book. [ISBN 1-84000-129-1].
I have also managed to buy new the Bannerman books, "Little Black Quibba", Little Black Mingo, and Little Black Quasha from Amazon - see my Bannerman site. From e-bay, I have bought a copy of The Jumbo Sambo that includes Little Kettlehead and Sambo and the Twins. And then from Amazon's Z-Shop, I have acquired, "The Teasing Monkey".
This month's hits I put up a special header for St. Geogre's day on 24th April. The Telegraph did a special article on St. George's day, claiming that the English by and large now consider this to be an irrelevance. Notwithstanding this, the hit count for Sterling times climbed considerably. Many thanks to the Electronic Telegraph for linking to this site. Page hits have climbed to a maximum of 1,000 a day, but average is in the order of 500. Message board My Message Board is starting to generate a satisfying level of activity. There have been several negative comments from socialist/liberal types who don't like the site. I have responded in a suitably polite manner. Your contribution to my Message Board would be welcome. Tony Martin Regular visitors will know that I have been supporting Tony Martin from the outset. I am truely shocked that a jury of English people has convicted him of murder following his defence of his home during an invasion by thieves. I still need to work out how to respond in these pages. Copyright police I have restructured the site to overcome attacks from the British copyright protection agencies. Most sound files are now on a friend's USA server. Torchy the battery boy I have recorded the theme tune of Torchy in sound with video. This can be picked up from my Torchy site. All Advantage and other free things I continued to get paid to surf by All Advantage. The display bar looks far better on my large screen computer. Another cheque has now arrived. I have three options for free surfing with free telphone calls: Greatxscape, Lineone with Quip, and Callnet. Greatxscape is technically good but seems to filter out some newsgroup downloads, Lineone with Quip has become inaccessible and is now unusable in the evenings. Callnet is very very slow. Freenetname provide the best all round service, but telephone time is chargeable. Still well worth while for the technical superiority of this ISP. Hello Children Everywhere I'm still working in this site: Hello Children Everywhere - Classic Children's Records. For the avoidance of doubt, I do not sell the records, it's just another avenue by which a bit of history might be preserved. For Mash get Smash Remember the alien potatoe people in the Cadbury's advertisement; they have been voted the second best advertisement ever. I have recorded the mini-documentary (3.5 minutes) in Real Video. This is a classic. For Mash Get Smash. Links I have had to split my links page into two owing to its growing size; see Overflow 2. Here are some interesting links for May: Buzby Posters - from The Old Telephone Company, Essex, England. Comic characters - with Pip, Squeak & Wilfred and Muffin the Mule amongst others. Thr Nostalgia Collection - focussing upon Railway Nostaglia. The OTR Archive - for old time radio. Kiddie Karousel - Children's songs and music. Media Pages - with offshore radio Barry Gray Music of the Week - Barry Gray is best known for creating the music for most of Gerry & Sylvia Anderson's television series in the 1960's and 70's -- notably FIREBALL XL5, THUNDERBIRDS, UFO, and SPACE:1999. While some of this music was commercially released, much of it was not, and most which was is long out-of-print. As such, fans of Barry Gray's music have little they can buy commercially, and must deal with other fans to obtain these rare recordings. Some of these recordings can even be traced back to Barry Gray himself, who would sometimes make copies of his personal tapes for fans. Remember These - useful selection of midi files, and more with big band oldies. Well, that's it for this month. Please keep visiting! Kind regards - Stephen Lewis |
