The Soutlanders love a little communication. Please get in touch with them. What a shame that the song was not selected for the new "Hello Children Everywhere" release. A grave error on the part of EMI! Stephen (May 2002)

This remains one of the most favourite children's records of the last century. Like Teddy Bears' picnic", Hole in the Ground" and "Right Said Fred", it still works extremely well for children.

12. I Am A Mole And I Live In A Hole

"The Mole In the Hole" by The Southlanders Lryrics

I'm not a bat or a rat or a cat,
I'm not a gnu or a kangaroo,
I'm not a goose or a moose on the loose,
I am a mole and I live in a hole.

I'm not a cow or a chow or a sow,
I'm not a snake or a hake or a drake,
I'm not a flea or a wee chimpanzee,
I am a mole and I live in a hole.

Yarg yarg, quarck quarck, fried boiled or roast,
You're the slick chick I dig the most ,
I'm not a ram or a clam or a lamb,
I'm not a hog or a frog or a dog,
I'm not a bus or a hip-potomus,
I am a mole and I live in a hole.

Yarg yarg, quarck quarck, fried boiled or roast,
You're the slick chick I dig the most,
I'm not a ram or a clam or a lamb,
I'm not a hog or a frog or a dog,
I'm not a bus or a hip-potomus,
I am a mole and I live in a hole. I am a mole and I live in a hole.

Despite their worldwide achievements, the song which is most associated with The Southlanders is a novelty track with a memorable baseline.

"I am a mole and I live in a hole" has stuck with them. Inseparable for nearly 35 years.

Vernon has now sung the song over 20,000 times. "Most people over 30 or 40 years old know it", he says. "And it still crops up in trivia quizzes."

"The amazing thing is that it's such a stupid song!"

"I didn't even want to record it and had to be pursuaded. But I admit now that it was the best thing for us".

"Any music that is so striking as to be positively associated with you for so long has got to be a plus. And it encouraged people to buy many of our records."

"Mole" peaked in the lower reaches of the Top Twenty when it was released in 1958. But since then it has been performed at every engagement.

Although The Southlanders once tried to ditch it from the act, the audience and club managers joined forces to insist that it went back in.

"It's become protected. Untouchable. We've even sung it in Japanese", says Vernon.

Vernon Nesbeth is the sole remaining original member of the band.
